Santa Barbara Mining Trail

The Santa Barbara Mining Trail is a circular route approximately 500 km long that crosses southwestern Sardinia, divided into about thirty stages connecting natural landscapes, historic villages, and industrial archaeology sites.

One of the central stages, Stage 6, from Piscinas to Montevecchio, winds for approximately 19 km through holm oak forests, Mediterranean scrub, and abandoned mining sites, with significant elevation gain and a hike-friendly pace of several hours.

Albergo Al Cinghiale is located right next to the route of this stage, and for those walking the Trail, it can serve as a refreshment point, logistical support, and a place to stamp their credentials before continuing.

Montevecchio Mines

The Montevecchio mines are one of the most important historical mining sites in Sardinia and in Italy. Mining activity in the area probably dates back to Roman times, but large-scale industrial extraction began in the mid-19th century with the exploitation of lead and zinc, turning Montevecchio into one of the most productive mining centres in Europe. Around the mines a large industrial village developed, which at its peak was home to more than 3,000 inhabitants, including miners, technicians and their families.

Mining operations continued until 1991, leaving behind a vast complex of industrial buildings, workshops, shafts and workers’ settlements. Today much of this heritage has been restored and is part of the Geomining Historical and Environmental Park of Sardinia. Guided tours allow visitors to explore galleries, mining sites and historic buildings such as the Management Palace, discovering the history and daily life of one of the island’s most important mining districts.
